Work in progress:
Here I presented 3 sections of my work, exploring different forms of expression including voice-over, dance and song.
Suggested changes for the next video:
Michelle Carriger Says:
Remove mixed race guilt song in the cage.
What does mixed race guilt mean to you?
Do something else when you sink into the cage.
The flour, the vinegar and the text provide a feeling of heritage.
The images work best when there is a tension between images and words, a spatula in the place of a mirror.
Read Cloud Nine and Bell Hooks.
Maybe I will attack ideals of white beauty in the 19th century, attack white ideals of beauty today, describe the ambition we have to be beautiful, because beauty is powerful or at least accepted. describe mixed race guilt, and my denial of culture.
In the cage I could describe my hatred of words like half-breed and mongrel, we are not dogs. No one else is referred to as a breed, there is no white breed or black breed and race too is problematic because race is used to describe categories, women in the 19th century were a race, it seems to be a word for the lowest common denominator. So if i am a woman and i have a mixed heritage that must make me the lowest of the low.
But I am not the lowest common denominator, not anymore. You will be surprised to know, we do not live in a post-sexist, post racist world. These forms of visual prejudice still exist but with constantly changing pictures on the dart board.

I asked Alethea Raban to watch the above clip of my work in progress and scribble on my whiteboard, images, words and phrases that came to mind as she watched.
This form of feedback reflects her immediate reaction to the piece in an artistic form. This form of feedback has allowed me to interpret responses in a new way. I could determine which images, that I created in my piece, lingered in Alethea's mind and what further images she believes can be achieved around the work.
