The Bleach Series explores the desire to remove, hide and wash away ethnicity. To cover up anything of colour with a blanket of white. To replace furniture and fabrics from Africa with lace and pearls and porcelain ballerinas.
Skin bleaching and "passing" as white has been a serious issue and response to racial bullying and impossible western ideals of beauty. Pouring bleach on the skin burns, the corrosive liquid eats through the skin and makes it raw and red. The skin flakes and peels and darkens the skin where the damage has been done.
